When you think about India, streetwear might not be the first thing to pop into your mind. After this, you might want to reconsider.

Although often linked to traditional garments, Indian clothing is truly a world to discover when it comes to streetwear. There is something to be said about the new generation of Indian designers who are taking all of their ancestry, upholding their roots, and integrating it with modern design and trends as means of creating a completely new, exciting, visual identity for the nation’s youth. A visual identity, that no doubt, will soon sweep all over the global urban scene.

So for this week’s Editor’s Pick, we’re taking a look at our current favourite Indian streetwear brands! Are you ready? Here we go:

Almost Gods

First up we have Almost Gods. The name alone takes expectations above and beyond. The New Delhi based streetwear brand does not disappoint, we even dare say, it lives up to its name.

Since its launch in 2018, Almost Gods has strived to make use of streetwear’s unique power when it comes to pushing boundaries and both ignoring, and surpassing, any and every expectation of the global fashion market. Contrary to what some may think, Almost Gods believes that India can hold its own against any other country in the streetwear sphere. It aims to drive its home country’s presence and influence in the global urban fashion market.

The label’s style plays with different silhouettes and experiments with different types of materials. Its modern, urban feel is elevated by the integration of typically Indian details, blurring the boundaries between modern design and traditional ideas. Truly one of our favourite discoveries as of late!

SIX5SIX

This sports and streetwear brand captained by sister-brother-duo Avni and Ambar Aneja is very clear regarding what they’re about. SIX5SIX is here to question anything and everything, to challenge and break the norms, in short, they are breaking the rules to make way for their own.

They seek to represent the new generation of Indian youngsters, emerging from within the traditional boundaries, breaking free from any structure that held them back.

SIX5SIX is bold, loud, unafraid, and unapologetic. And their pieces, reflect just that. The brand is confident about what they want. SIX5SIX isn’t just an Indian streetwear brand, SIX5SIX is the new India. Full stop.

prxkhxr

For prxkhxr the goal is simple: designing comfortable clothes, with good prints. End of story. No more, no less. And that is exactly what you get.

It seems like 2019 was a great year for Indian streetwear, because prxkhxr was also conceived that year. All the label’s production is local, with the fabrics being sourced from various craft clusters across the whole of India, and the actual making of the clothes taking place in Delhi.

prxkhxr is a brand that caters to the youth of today. It’s collections are vibrant, colourful, fun, statement pieces in a way, but not too over the top. A piece that says, “hey I’m here”, making one’s arrival known, without the need to scream. In a way it’s the perfect expression of today’s young generations. Character, individualism, while still pertaining to a tribe, giving off that community feel.

Now this is a uniform we’d be well excited to wear.
